Mathew M. (Maston) Elmore, Jr.
(October 27, 1842 - November 19, 1903)
Mathew M. (Maston) Elmore, Jr. was born October 27, 1842 in Henry Coutny, Alabama near Abbeville, and died November 19, 1903 in Sevier County, Tennessee. He was the son of Mathew Elmore (1792 NC) and Lucinda (Lucy) Tait-Elmore. Mathew M. (Maston) Elmore, Jr. married first time to Emiline Williams on May 30, 1861 in Jackson County, Florida. Emiline was born in 1846, and died September 1862, in Jackson County, Florida, about the time Mathew was entering the Civil War in Jackson County, Florida. No children were born to his first marriage. Mathew entered the Civil War as Private Co. E. 6th Fla. Inf. Regt. at Marianna, Florida, Jackson County on March 28, 1862. He was missing at the Battle of Missionary Ridge, Tennessee, and taken to Rock Island, Illinois Union Prison as a POW, and enlisted in the Union USA Navy from Jnuary 19, 1864 to July 25, 1865. His military records indicate he had dark complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair, and was 5 ft. 11 inches tall.
His second marriage was to Rhonda Caroline Newman-Lafollette, on August 15, 1865 in Sevier County, Tennessee, who was the widow of William R. Lafollette, who died during the Civil War in Tennessee, leaving five children from his marriage to Rhoda. Mathew M. (Maston) Elmore, Jr, married Rhoda when he went to Sevier, Tennessee with a USA Navy buddy George Lafollette, who was on the same patrol boat, USS Ohio & USS Iosco with him during the Civil War, patrolling the Cumberland River, and both were discharged at Brooklyn, N.Y. on March 28, 1865, and returned to Sevier County, Tennessee.
Mathew M. Elmore and Rhoda were the parents of three Elmore children from their marriage:
1. William Henry Elmore was born July 3, 1866.
2. Mary Virginia Elmore was born May 7, 1868.
3. Dolly Ann Elmore was born April 13, 1870.
Mathew was wounded in a gun powder explosion on the gun boat he was serving on during the Civil War, and he remained blind in one eye the remainder of his life. Mathew and Rhoda lived at Fair Gardens, and both are buried in Jones Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, Sevier County, Tennessee, were they were members of this church for many years. Mathew has a large USA Navy headstone marker above his gravesite. Mathew M. (Maston) Elmore, Jr. never returned to Henry County or Jackson County before his death.
